  About Us

A group of women in an SVS programmeNearly three-fourth of India's population resides in distant and scattered 6 lakh villages. As India is the country of villages, the path of the country's development also goes through fields of these villages. Even today, India is the house to most of the poor people of the world.

Uttar Pradesh fares even worse. According to a report of the World Bank, every 12th person in the world resides in Uttar Pradesh, suffering from the burning problems of illiteracy, unemployment and lack of health care. Main mean of livelihood of the people living in rural areas is agriculture, animal husbandry and allied small businesses. The landless in the villages depend on agriculture labour for their livelihood. Because of declining rainfall, the groundwater table is going down continuously. Villages are plagued with enmity, lack of knowledge and stereotypes.

Keeping the above mentioned facts in mind, Shiksha Vikas Sabha (SVS) was founded by some social workers and aware citizens on August 5, 1984, for overall development of the people lagging in social and economic development. As the founders were primarily concerned over villages, they decided to keep the headquarters of the organisation in the villages and to work at the grassroots level.

SVS was registered as a non-profit organisation registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. For the legal status of the organisation, please see the accompanying box.

Apart from different development projects that SVS undertakes from time to time, it is running a primary school with permanent recognition from the Education Department of the Uttar Pradesh Government. Children from six villages around the school are studying in the school. The organisation is also running a public library by the name Shiksha Vikas Library and a reading room.

The organisation follows highest ideals of the voluntary sector. It is a member of the Credibility Alliance (membership number 00612UP06), an organisation determining standards for the voluntary sector. In addition it is a member of state and national level network organisations.
