Girdhari LalGirdhari Lal, the Manager-Secretary of Shiksha Vikas Samiti, was born on August 5, 1946, in Ghanghauli, a remote village in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh in an ordinary farmer family. He got his primary education in the government school in his village. He passed High School and Intermediate examinations from the Khair Inter College, Khair, in Aligarh district. He did B Sc from Shri Varshneya College, Aligarh, and got Silver Medal from Seth Govind Das for obtaining maximum marks in the subject. He did LT (a teacher training course) from Government Basic Training College, Varanasi. Later he did M Sc from Agra University. Soon after doing postgraduation, he started teaching Mathematics at Bajna College, Bajna, in Mathura district and has retired fromt he same college..

In 1981 he was elected president of Agriculture Loan Cooperative Committee covering eight gram panchayats. The committee provided fertilisers, seeds and credit to almost 6,000 farmers. His popularity can be gauged from the fact that he was elected to the post of president thrice in a row.  He was elected as Senior Block Pramukh of Tappal development block. He did several works of public interest through gram panchayat and education committees. He was elected Director of Cooperative Federation in 1989 and continued on the post for two years. While being on these positions, he provided credit, fertilisers, seeds, etc., to the area's farmers. As a result, agriculture yield in the area increased considerably. He also got subsidy on fertilisers to the farmers on time.

In the meantime, on his birthday in 1984 he established social organisation Shiksha Vikas Sabha with a few respected people of the area for taking up people welfare works. Since 1992, he is working as Chief Executive Officer of the organisation. SVS has been registered under various statutes as per requirements. It is also member of several networks.

Immediately after the formation, the organisation started a public library for which he made available a room in his home without rent. He donated an iron cupboard and a few books to the library. Since then every year he donates some books to the library, which is still operational.

To tackle illiteracy in the area, he gave one of his two-story homes to the Shiksha Vikas Vidyalaya, which he founded and got permanent recognition from the Uttar Pradesh Government. He donates Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 every year for education of the poor children.

He got toilets constructed for the beneficiaries of the rural poor and they are still functional. He organised rural poor. The then Zila Panchayat Chairperson, Mahipal Singh, himself attended a function of this organisation and praised the effort.

Girdhari Lal conducted a computer training programme in this remote area. The programme was inaugurated by the present Zila Panchayat Chairperson, Tejvir Singh. He conducted Women Empowerment Programme, Female Foeticide and Birth Registration Programme, Aaroj Campaign, etc., successfully. Through his untiring efforts he got Village Resource Centre from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), benefitting scores of farmres.

His efforts in social sector have been widely recognised:

  • For providing positive cooperation in the field of women welfare, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Aligarh, selected this organisation.
  • In 2007, he was bestowed Mahatma Jyoti Ba Phule Fellowship Award by Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Academy to work in the field of education and social service.
  • In 2009, he was given Best Citizen of India Award by International Publishing House, New Delhi.
  • In 2010, he was selected as a member of Juvenile Justice Board of Aligarh for three years, through a notification dated August 16, 2010, of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

And the journey continues.
